About This Work
Honbo Keisen, born Yuuzou Honbo in Takaoka, Japan, was a master metal engraver and inlay artist celebrated for his technical brilliance and innovative designs in Takaoka copperware. The youngest of seven children in a family of metal casters, Keisen apprenticed locally before establishing his own practice in his early twenties. He was largely self-taught in calligraphy and Japanese painting, which informed his refined aesthetic.
Keisen’s career was marked by leadership and recognition within Japan’s craft community. He served as head of the Takaoka Metal Engraving Association and was certified as a Traditional Craftsman of Takaoka Copperware, in addition to receiving the Order of the Rising Sun, 7th Class, and becoming a full member of the Japan Kōgei Association.
A frequent exhibitor at Japan’s premier craft shows, Keisen earned numerous awards, including Gold and Silver Prizes at the Japan Traditional Crafts Toyama Exhibition, and multiple selections for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition. His work is renowned for its intricate patterns, masterful use of bronze, and innovative inlay techniques, establishing him as a defining figure in 20th-century Japanese metalwork.
