About This Work
UCHIJIMA Masao (b. 1942)
Uchijima Masao is a prominent contemporary lacquer artist renowned for his innovative use of traditional dry-lacquer (kanshitsu) techniques. As a distinguished Japanese artist specializing in lacquerware (Urushi work), he holds the status of a Full Member of the Japan Kōgei Association, a designation that signifies the highest recognition for traditional craftsmanship in Japan.
Uchijima is a master of the complex Kanshitsu (dry lacquer) technique, where objects are formed by applying layers of lacquer over a textile base (such as hemp) without a wood or metal core, resulting in light yet extremely durable pieces.
His craftsmanship is highly celebrated: he has been awarded 13 times at the prestigious Japan Kōgei Association Exhibitions. His body of work is characterized by a refined aesthetic and the use of traditional lacquer finishes like Nuritate (an unpolished, deep-lustre finish) and Tamenuri (a translucent layer of lacquer over a coloured base). Masao Uchijima’s oeuvre includes a variety of forms, from large dishes and bowls to detailed covered boxes, often featuring elegant or flowing designs.
