About This Work

SHIBATA Akira (b.1942)

Shibata Akira was born in Yokkaichi City, Mie Prefecture, in 1942. After graduating from Aichi Prefectural Seto Ceramics High School, he joined the Ando Cloisonné Company, a firm established in 1880 that has upheld both modern and traditional cloisonné techniques for over 50 years.

Shibata's works are created using the traditional yūsen (wire) technique, involving numerous intricate steps, including design, substrate processing, pattern application, glazing, firing, and polishing - all of which he completes himself. This demanding craft requires a high level of skill and years of experience, a true testament to his mastery.

Since 1970, he has been consistently selected for the prestigious Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition, where he has not only received numerous awards but has also served as a judge. Today, Shibata Akira is widely recognized as one of Japan's leading cloisonné enamel artists.
