About This Work
This striking neriage jar by Matsui Koyo demonstrates the artist’s mastery of layered clay techniques, in which colored clays are skillfully combined to create intricate patterns that appear both spontaneous and harmonious. The subtle interplay of stripes showcases Matsui’s refined sense of rhythm, balance, and texture, resulting in a piece that is at once elegant and dynamic.
Marked underneath and accompanied by a signed tomobako, this jar reflects both the technical precision and the aesthetic sensibility that define Matsui’s contemporary ceramic work.
Matsui Koyo (b. 1962)
Matsui Koyo (b. 1962) is a distinguished Japanese potter who continues the artistic legacy of his father, the celebrated Living National Treasure Matsui Kosei (1927–2003). Koyo specializes in the complex technique of neriage (also known as nerikomi), where different coloured clays are blended and layered to create intricate, marble-like patterns. This demanding process was originally developed during the Tang Dynasty in China and was later refined in Japan.
Matsui Koyo's work is defined by its refined aesthetic and technical precision. He utilizes vibrant colours and complex patterns that are both visually striking and tactilely appealing. His pieces are often presented in hand-signed wooden boxes (tomobako), which emphasize the authenticity and value of the artwork.
His ceramics are held in prestigious collections, including the National Crafts Museum in Japan. A notable example of his mastery is a 2016 neriage jar, which was featured at the 33rd Seibu Kogei Exhibition in Fukuoka.
For collectors interested in Japanese ceramics, Matsui Koyo is an artist whose work successfully embodies both traditional craftsmanship and a modern aesthetic sensibility.
