About This Work

Sano Hiroyuki

Sano Hiroyuki is a master of copperware and metal engraving based in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture — Japan's foremost centre for metal casting and chasing. His career reflects a sustained dedication to this craft, marked by decades of recognition at the highest levels of Japanese traditional art.

In 1964 he began his training under his father, Jinkichi Sano, studying the art of metal carving. His talent was formally recognized in 1967 with the Toyama Traditional Crafts Award, a distinction he would go on to receive six times. The following year, in 1968, his work was first selected for the prestigious, state-sponsored Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition (Nihon Dento Kogeiten) — the beginning of a remarkable record of 29 further selections. In 1970 his metalwork was also selected for the Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition), where he would go on to receive 13 additional awards.

In 1974 Sano was certified as a member of the Japan Crafts Association (Nihon Kogeikai), affirming his standing among the nation's leading traditional craftsmen. His continued achievements and active presence within the Takaoka artisan community led to his appointment as President of the Takaoka Metal Engraving Association in 1998. In 2010 the city of Takaoka honoured him with the title of Person of Distinguished Service, in recognition of his lifelong contribution to the local craft tradition.

In 2018 his achievements were further recognized at the national level when he was awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Silver Rays, one of Japan's highest imperial honours.
