About This Work
Born in Chiba, Japan in 1952, ITO Shin has lived and worked in Mashiko, Tochigi Prefecture, where he studied under fellow Mashiko potter Kikuchi Akira. His work combines traditional Japanese ceramic technique with a distinctly modern sensibility, drawing on the charm of natural textures and materials — a fusion that Japanese craft traditions render with particular elegance. Ito works exclusively on a manual, non-electric potter's wheel, allowing the clay's natural irregularities to remain visible in the finished form. A member of the Dentokogeikai (Traditional Arts Guild) and the Japan Ceramics Exhibition, he has been selected to exhibit in these shows since 1977.
