Short Description

Kakurezaki Ryūichi is one of Japan’s most celebrated contemporary ceramicists, whose exhibitions often sell out within minutes. Born in Nagasaki on the island of Kyushu, he now lives and works in Imbe, the historic home of Bizen ware. Viewed as an outsider in this traditional community of over 500 potters, Kakurezaki has the freedom to experiment in ways others cannot, creating work that is firmly rooted in tradition yet distinct in aesthetic and vision.

His philosophy bridges craft and everyday life: “I create ‘crafts’ that are indispensable for everyday life. I think it important that professional potters should create something in response to the needs of our society. My preference is to be seen as a craftsman whose work is avant-garde, rather than an avant-garde artist.” His innovative approach has inspired peers to challenge classical forms while establishing a standard uniquely his own.

Kakurezaki’s works are held in major collections worldwide, including the Art Institute of Chicago, Victoria & Albert Museum (London), Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Asian Art Museum, San Francisco, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Musée national de céramique, Sèvres, among others.
