IRON NANBAN TSUBA

IRON NANBAN TSUBA

Japan, Edo period, 18th century

This well-carved tsuba of round shape with a square seppa-dai and a kozuka-hitsu-ana (with shakudo restoration), is decorated with two shishi (Chinese temple dogs or lions) and balls surrounded by in- and undercut foliage. The fine carving of the shishi, detailed (double) rim, fine carving of the foliage and the fact that both balls have a smaller movable part inside, all point to the Yagami-school in Nagasaki.

Diameter: 7,2 cm
