IRON SUKASHI TSUBA

Iron Sukashi Tsuba

Japan, Edo period, 17th century

The relatively thick iron body pierced with two namako (sea cucumber) surrounding the ryo-hitsu-ana. The seppa-dai exhaustively adjusted (tagane-ato) to fit a smaller sword; a practice found more often in Japan, which could indicate that this tsuba was handed down through several generations.
