Japan, ca. 1960

Height: 29,2 cm

Diameter: 9,5 cm

A bronze vase of elegant hourglass shape and two geometrically designed handles at the waist, finished with a beautiful red bronze patina.

Aida Tomiyasu, the artistic name (gō in Japanese) of Ibara Meijiro, was born in Tateyama City, Chiba Prefecture. He trained in metal casting under Yamamoto Azumi (1880–1945), a fellow graduate of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts’ metal casting department.

From 1929 to 1957, Aida was a regular exhibitor at Japan’s prestigious government-sponsored exhibitions—the Teiten, Shin-Bunten, and Nitten—winning the Grand Prize at the 1949 Nitten. His work also gained international acclaim, with successful showings at the 1939 New York World’s Fair and the Golden Gate International Exposition. Known for his Art Deco-inspired aesthetic, Aida’s distinctive style is exemplified in this piece.
