SHAKUDO TSUBA WITH A CHINESE LANDSCAPE
SHAKUDO TSUBA WITH A CHINESE LANDSCAPE
Japan, Edo-period, 19th century
Unsigned
The oval shaped (naga maru gata) shakudo tsuba showing large mountains viewed from a terrace of a Chinese (?) villa. The background completely made of nanako (small round dots) and details like the fence, pine trees and grasses, in gold.
From late medieval times, cultural elites around the Ashikaga-family members were especially interested in Chinese ink paintings. These paintings were voraciously collected and even Japanese painters were later commissioned to create works in the style of their Chinese forebears. This tsuba shows a decor which was inspired by this classical Chinese and Japanese style of painting.
